One in 10 homeowners burgled while away

One in 10 homes have been burgled while its owners were on holiday or a day trip, according to Churchill Insurance.

Research from the insurer found that the total value of items stolen averaged £3,288 per incident. DVDs, CDs and videos were found to be the most popular items taken, accounting for 44% of stolen items, with jewellery coming in second place at 43%.

Claire Foster, spokesperson for Churchill Insurance, said: “While insurance cannot prevent burglary, it can provide reassurance that the monetary value of anything stolen is covered. We would urge homeowners to ensure their contents insurance is fully up to date and high value items are individually listed. Plus, there are a few simple home security steps that can help keep homes and their contents protected.”

Churchill's top tips for home security include opening curtains and taking in newspapers, post and milk before you leave in the morning, not leaving valuable items in view, and ensuring potential points of entry, such as windows and doorways, are well lit.
